John Andrew's
Badges & Insignia
by John Andrew

How the Badges Are Made
All of our badges, medals & insignia are hand-made by John Andrew. They are sculpted in clay & a silicone mould made. They are then cast in polyurethane resin, hand-painted and framed to create the final product.
Sculpting
Our large scale badges are works of art, sculpted in an oven-baked clay before a mould is made to allow their reproduction. John carves out the shape and adds details such as lettering from other worked pieces of clay. This process takes several days, the number of hours spent on each badge varying depending on the intricacy of the piece.

Moulding
When the badge has been sculpted and baked a mould is made from silcone rubber. After a few hours the mould is removed from the original, cleaned out and is ready for use.
Casting
All of our badges, medals & insignia are hand cast in 2 part polyurethane resin.
Painting
Once cast and cleaned up the badges are hand-painted to given a bronze or silver look using a multi-stage process including undercoating and highlighting to bring out the detail.

Framing
The finished badge or medal is then mounted using an appropriate coloured background and framed for display. The frame can be wall-hung or free standing. The badges can also be supplied without a frame for mounting, framing or other uses.
